Why Continuous Shuffling Machines Kill Most Advantage Plays

In 2003 a group of MIT students came to Vegas with a card-counting system. A continuous shuffling machine made it useless.

I spent six months in an underground poker room in East London. Illegal room. Twenty-pound ante. The players were accountants and roofers who played three times a week. The room had exactly one dealer, a man named Charles. Charles had been dealing since 1982. He could shuffle a deck and cut it to any position he wanted without the casual observer noticing.

The shuffling matters because it determines what comes next. A skilled dealer with a hand-shuffle controls information. A continuous shuffling machine eliminates that control.

What CSMs Are

Continuous Shuffling Machines are physical devices that accept played cards, shuffle them continuously, and dispense cards one at a time. The key feature: they shuffle after every hand or every few hands. No downtime between rounds. No readable shuffle pattern.

A traditional shoe of six decks: 312 cards. They are dealt out. When roughly 75 percent have been dealt, the shoe is replaced with a fresh one. In that 75-percent zone, a card counter can maintain accuracy about remaining cards. With a CSM, there is no progression. The machine shuffles constantly. The deck composition never deviates from randomness.

Card Counting Against Machines

Card counting works by tracking high and low cards. When low cards are removed from the shoe, the remaining deck is favorable to the player. When high cards are removed, it is favorable to the house. Counting requires that you track card removal over time.

A CSM removes that time component. After every hand, some cards go back into the machine. They get shuffled. The machine has no information about the cards. It does not know if it just shuffled ten aces and five kings (very good for you) or ten twos and five threes (bad for you). It just shuffles.

From a card counter's perspective, a CSM is like playing against an infinite deck. Your advantage disappears.

Other Advantage Plays

Card counting is just one form of advantage play. Shuffle tracking is another. A shuffle tracker watches the dealer shuffle and tries to predict where favorable cards will land in the next hand. With a CSM, there is nothing to track. The dealer does not shuffle. The machine does, and it does so in a way that is unpredictable.

Hole-carding (seeing a dealer's hole card through a careless reveal) is theoretically possible against a CSM, but it provides less advantage because the deck is so large (the machine holds the equivalent of many shoes at once).

Edge sorting (identifying cards by subtle differences in their edges and deliberately positioning them) is impossible because the CSM never shows the cards to the player in a state where edge sorting would help.

Why Casinos Use Them

Casinos use CSMs specifically to prevent advantage play. The cost of a CSM is high (maybe three thousand pounds) but the benefit is certain: no card counters. A mid-sized casino operates maybe six blackjack tables. Six CSMs cost eighteen thousand pounds. A single team of skilled counters can reduce casino profit by fifty thousand pounds in a week. The machines pay for themselves in that context.

The Irony

CSMs are also worse for casual players. Without penetration (playing deep into a shoe), the house edge on blackjack is higher against a CSM than against a shoe. Casual players do not benefit from counting, so they do not care. But statistically, the game is worse.

What I Saw in London

That underground poker room had Charles dealing every hand. Charles did not use a CSM. Charles used a hand shuffle. If you had the skill, you could read his shuffle and predict cards.

I never played. I was there to watch. I saw one man who knew Charles's shuffle pattern. That man won steadily for four months until Charles changed his technique. Then the man lost. The advantage was real. The vulnerability was real.

With a CSM, that man's edge would have been zero from day one. That is the machine's entire purpose.
