Exploiting Limp-Callers at Micro-Stakes Cash Games

Blimey, the micro-stakes games are full of muppets who think limping is a strategy. Here is how you take their money.

Right, listen. I spent forty years taking bets in London. I know weakness when I see it. Micro-stakes poker online is absolutely rife with players who limp. They limp with rubbish. They limp with medium hands. They limp because they do not know what else to do. And you can absolutely run them over like a lorry if you know the play.

The Limp Problem

A limp is when a player calls the big blind from early position without raising. Dead giveaway. He has got a hand he likes but does not like well enough to raise. A pocket pair from six to seven. AJ offsuit. KT suited. Hands that are above calling from out of position but below proper raising hands.

Here is the thing: those hands are garbage compared to a raise. A raise gets information. A limp gives information away. Everyone at the table sees that limp and thinks, "weak hand, decent kicker, probably from an amateur."

The Exploit

When you see a limp, raise it. This is called "iso-raising" (isolation raising). Raise to 4.5 times the big blind. You want the limper to fold if possible, but if he calls, you have position and a stronger range. Most limpers will fold to an iso-raise.

If the limper calls your iso-raise, play your position. If you have KQ and the flop comes K-J-7, you bet. If you have 9-9 and the flop comes A-K-Q, you check and fold. The point is that you are making decisions based on position and board texture, not based on some mystical "should I bluff here" nonsense.

The Money

In a 2 pound-2 pound game, an iso-raise wins 3-4 pounds uncontested maybe four times an orbit. That is 12-16 pounds per orbit. An orbit is maybe five minutes. You are earning 2.5 to 3 pounds per minute just from iso-raising limpers. Do that for an hour and you have made 150 quid, give or take variance.

Over a week of play, just from iso-raising limpers without ever seeing a showdown, you can clear 1,000 quid. The game has to have enough limpers (minimum three per table), but most micro-stakes games do.

The Important Bit

Do not get bored and start playing stupid. Once you have established that you raise limps, tighten your range. Raise with AJ, AQ, KQ, KJ. Raise with TT and above. Do not start raising with 92o just because you are up a few quid. That is how you turn a profitable spot into a losing one.

Also, pick your table. A table full of strong players with minimal limping is not a good iso-raise table. A table with six limpers per orbit is a goldmine. Sit there and be methodical.

The Honesty

Listen, exploiting weak play is not pretty. It is not complicated. It is not some brilliant poker theory. It is just understanding that some players are weak and pressing that weakness. That is poker. That is also life, I suppose. The weak get taken advantage of. The best you can do is be kind about it and not run them over so hard that they quit the game.

Once they quit, you lose your profit. So be measured. Extract value. Let them win a hand now and then. Keep them in the game. The smartest move is not winning the most money in one session. It is keeping the game profitable for as long as possible.

That is how you turn micro-stakes into a proper income. On the nose.
