Closing Line Value

Closing line value (CLV) is the difference between the price you took and the price the market closed at. If you backed a team at 2.20 and the line closed at 2.00, you beat the close. Because the closing price reflects the most information and the most money, it is widely treated as the best available estimate of the true probability, and consistently beating it is one of the strongest signs that a bettor has an edge.

How do you calculate closing line value?

Strip the margin from both sides of the closing market to get a fair closing probability. Then compare it with the implied probability of the price you took. If your price implied 45.5 per cent (2.20) and the fair close is 48 per cent, the outcome was more likely than your price needed, so you captured positive CLV. Expressed as expected value, that is the fair probability multiplied by your decimal odds, minus one: 0.48 times 2.20, minus 1, or about 5.6 per cent. The closing line value calculator bulletin works each step by hand with real closing prices.

Why does beating the closing line matter?

Results are noisy; prices are less so. A bettor can win money over a few hundred bets by luck, or lose with genuinely good prices. CLV measures the quality of each price at the moment the bet was placed, independently of the result, so it shows skill far sooner than profit does. It is also why some bookmakers limit accounts that keep beating the close, whatever their results.

Is closing line value always right?

No. Closing lines in thin markets, such as lower leagues or obscure props, carry less information and can be wrong. Margins at the close vary between books, so the choice of reference book matters. And CLV is a long-run measure: even a real edge needs a large sample before it separates from noise. The closing line value in sports betting bulletin covers what the research says and where the measure breaks down.

How is CLV related to line movement?

Line movement is how the close comes about. If you take a price and the market later moves towards your side, you end up with CLV. That is why reading line movement and measuring CLV are two halves of the same job.
