Player Prop Line Movement: News Clocks and Injury Tags
NBA status deadlines, NFL injury tags and DraftKings' Early Exit refund rule: the fixed clocks and terms behind news-driven moves in prop prices.

Player prop line movement is the market repricing one player's stat line, and the move that carries the most information is the one tied to availability news. In the NBA that news runs on a fixed clock: teams must file a status by 5 p.m. local the day before a game, then a game-day report. In the NFL, the injury tag itself tells you how hard a price should react.
Read every move the same way. A shorter price on one side means the book now rates that side as more likely; a longer price means less likely. The question is always what changed the estimate.
What moves a player prop line
A prop line moves for one of two reasons: the book's projection of the player changed, or the money on one side forced a reprice. News about who plays, and for how long, changes the projection fastest.
| Driver | What it changes | How to read the move |
|---|---|---|
| Player's own status | Whether he plays at all, and how much | Strongest signal, tied to a report time |
| Rest or workload | Minutes or snaps, not just availability | Often lands with the scheduled report |
| One-sided money | Nothing about the player | Weaker on its own; check for a news trigger |
| Refund rules at a book | Who carries early-exit risk | Can split prices across books on the same news |
A move with no report behind it is money talking. A move that lands on a report deadline is the market pricing new information. This bulletin treats the second kind as the one worth reading.
The NBA injury report clock behind prop moves
NBA availability news arrives in scheduled windows, so prop prices tend to jump at predictable times rather than drift. The league's participation status filing rules set the deadlines below, all in the home team's local time.
| Report | Deadline (local time) |
|---|---|
| Status for a player whose availability may be affected | By 5 p.m. the day before the game |
| Second game of a back-to-back | By 1 p.m. on game day |
| Game-day report | Between 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. |
| Game-day report, tip-off at 5 p.m. or earlier | Between 8 and 10 a.m. |
The game-day report is updated continually after it is filed, so a late scratch can still move a prop close to tip. Rest counts too: the policy covers injuries, illnesses and rest designations for every game, so a planned night off hits the market through the same channel as a sprain.
For a reader, the clock is the filter. A points prop that moves at the game-day window is almost always responding to the report. One that moves hours earlier, with no filing, is more likely money or a projection update.
How NFL injury tags read in the market
NFL tags are blunt categories, and the price move is what grades the doubt inside them. Under the league's revised injury report definitions, Questionable means uncertain to play, Doubtful means unlikely to participate and Out means will not play.
The Probable tag is gone, and the reason matters for prop readers. The league found that approximately 95 percent of Probable players played anyway, so the label carried almost no information. Now any doubt at all goes under Questionable, which makes that tag a wide bucket: it covers a player who will almost surely suit up and one who is a true coin flip.
That is where the line does the work. Two receivers can both be Questionable while their yardage props move very differently. The tag says there is doubt; the size of the move says how much doubt the market sees. Practice reports add texture: a Limited Participation practice designation means less than 100 percent of a player's normal repetitions, which can hint at a reduced role even when he plays.
Reading a line and movement as probability change
A prop is a two-sided price, so any move is a transfer of implied probability from one side to the other. When the Over shortens, the market's estimate of the Over rose and the Under's fell by the matching amount, before margin.
Three checks turn a raw move into information:
- Timing. Did it land on a report window (NBA) or after a tag or practice report (NFL)? News-timed moves carry more weight.
- Direction across related props. If a starter is downgraded, his props should lengthen on the Over while a teammate's usage props shorten. Moves that line up across props point to news, not noise.
- Book rules. Settlement terms change what each side is worth, so the same news can move books by different amounts.
How refund rules change prop pricing
Settlement rules shift who carries injury risk, and that changes how far a prop needs to move on news. DraftKings' Early Exit refund program, launched in August 2025, returns the stake on qualifying props as a cash credit when the player leaves the game inside the eligibility window, which is the first quarter in the NBA.
The terms are narrow as of August 2025: only pre-match and full-game props qualify, and micro bets do not. For a reader, the effect is that an Over at that book carries less early-exit risk than the same Over elsewhere. A fragile player's Over can then hold its price better at one book while moving at another, and the gap reflects the rule, not a different read on the player.
Market questions
When do NBA player props move on injury news?
Around the league's reporting deadlines. A status is due by 5 p.m. local the day before a game, and the game-day report lands between 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. local (8 to 10 a.m. for tip-offs at 5 p.m. or earlier), with updates after that. A prop that moves inside those windows is usually answering a report.
Why did the NFL drop the Probable tag?
Because it told the market almost nothing. The league found that approximately 95 percent of players listed as Probable played anyway, so the tag was folded away and any real doubt now goes under Questionable.
Does a rest designation move an NBA prop?
It can. Rest is one of the reasons NBA teams must report, alongside injuries, illnesses and other medical conditions, so a planned night off reaches the market through the same report as an injury.
Which DraftKings props qualify for Early Exit?
Only pre-match, full-game props. Micro bets are excluded. A qualifying single prop is refunded as a cash credit when the player exits inside the eligibility window, which in the NBA is the first quarter.
